I'd pick Garrett from Thief: The Dark Project, Metal Age and Deadly Shadows. He's sarcastic, cynical, witty... This reluctant hero doesn't leave a mess of death behind him - unless the player wants to ;-)

And with all his thievery skills he'd keep me in jewels and finery - for a fee!

And if for no other reason than he's just plain cool, and I'd love him to be my friend.

It has to be Home Alone 2: Lost In New York. One of those few occassions where the sequel is better than the original. Of course, if you've never seen the original then shame on you - this film is funnier in the context of the first.

I think I'm going to download the soundtrack this year, because John William's themes for Harry and Marv, Kevin's family, and the battle plans are WIN.

Which December holidays do you celebrate, and why?

Yeah, I was raised Catholic, so Christmas is my December holiday. It's pretty much the most publicly important religious holiday - as opposed to the more spiritually important Easter - we celebrate. I think it's the retail and media hype that make it so much bigger than the rest.

And, of course, working retail in one of Europe's largest shopping centres, I can see the hype machine in action. All retailers are pushing people to put their hard-earned money in the tills, using every trick in the book, from decorations to backgraound music to the hype around the kids' visit to Santa, and a go on the train that takes them all around the shops. The fact that most of the banks, schools and offices are shut for the two to three weeks after Christmas makes it big and popular, and the relations all assume I'll be free to take time off - but I am contractually obliged to take no holidays from mid-November to mid-January, so I get only Christmas Day and Stephens' Day and New Years' Day off (as well as my contracted day off which happens to be New Years' Eve) and nobody seems to realise just how tiring and depressing this really is.

I know its' a lot of hype for just one day (or two days if you count St Stephens' Day or New Year's Day) but it's the mood that people are in that makes it a celebration. And I miss the days when I'd be off for most of December to enjoy the joys of the season.

I can haz internets naow? Kthanx!

Italy: Florence Sunset
My internet died over the Christmas and even hours spent with the uncle downloading on what has to be the slowest. broadband.. connection... ever.... last December, it's only now that issues have at least partly resolved themselves. *Whew*

Felt like I had lost an arm or something being unable to access teh LJ, so apologies to anyone who felt snubbed or ignored, I just didn't have internet access or money for a net cafe.

PotC Norrington/OFC Rec

Italy: Florence Sunset
Here is the latest part in a fabulous, epic Norrington/OFC fic, that I have the privilege of beta-ing, and I cannot reccommend or praise it highly enough.

It is set in and after DMC, but it makes Norrington's actions make sense - or at least for me it makes sense, if that is enough to reccommend it to those RNotCers who don't really go for DMC fics.

Earlier chapters are available on both rnotc and The Jack//Norrington comm.
Please, go, take a look, and leave feedback.

Just for fun, to be inserted into a future fic.

"I still don't see what enjoyment the Commodore could possibly take from ending the lives of all those pirates. It's not as though they are the menace they have been portrayed as," said Elizabeth to her knitting circle.

"Just because you have agathokakonophilic tendencies, Missus Turner, does not mean you are right above all of society," said Magpie behind her.

This ought to interest a lot of my flist

Italy: Florence Sunset
I have set up a new community. couplinginferno is a repository for Coupling fics to be written and read and generally enjoyed - and icons, art and other fanworks are all also most welcome. And I'll be re-posting all my previous Coupling fics, plus a brand spanking new one, as soon as I find a net cafe that accepts floppy disks.

I'll circulate information on Inferno more widely when I have more time and money to so do. But if any of my flist would like to help me out by mentioning it, I'd be grateful in a drabble-tastic way.

Well, this is unexpected. I was told check-in is at 8.30, and that the aircoach takes about an hour and a quarter from the UCD flyover. It took thirty minutes. I'm on my own in the Arrivals hall in Dublin Airport (there's a pay-as-you-go internet deallie here) as I don't have a ticket to check in with.

Who would have thought it? Not me. And not my Dad, who was slightly illegal in chasing the aircoach he caused me to miss up as far as UCD.

Roman Britain will come soon. But until then, I have another 15 mins online.

Printed off a bunch of CVs and have spent over an hour trawling through Dundrum Town Centre in the hopes of acquiring a job. I keep saying I'll take whatever hours they can give me and I'm starting to wonder if that sounds too desperate. And not all the stores accept CVs. They need to receive emails or their own application forms. How the Hell can I make the fact that I have never been employed before look good on the Harvey Nichols application form? Bah.

Italy: Florence Sunset
It's possible.

No, really, I could beCollapse )

I'm not happy with the way Norrington's characterisation was shredded, and T&T can't write films, IMHO, but they are not solely responsible - I now have it in for Verbinki and whoever was editing. Still, it's fun to lynch films aloud while watching and DMC has Davenport to make it even more enjoyable.

Fic Pimping

Italy: Florence Sunset
Take a look at sheebeen, also known as my fic journal, and check out my newest fics.

There is my most recent: a modern AU Gillington in which James and Andrew drive LUAS trams in Dublin. Available here.

For those who haven't seen it yet, there is also a fic involving Captain Jack Sparrow, Commodore Norrington and Lieutenant Gillette. Available here.

Also in the Sheebeen for your perusal is my latest Wedding Date Fic starring Jack Davenport's Edward Fletcher-Wooten and Amy Adams' Amy Ellis. Available here.
Italy: Florence Sunset
Go here and read my first fic featuring Jack Sparrow as a major player.

Did I go for Gillington, Sparrington, a polygamy!fic? Go and read it, and tell me what you all think.
Rated 15A for non-graphic m/m sex and themes.

My Bunnies are being Nuisances!

Italy: Florence Sunset
So. I have a bunny centring around James' court-martial (no actual court scene, just character before going in) and my Gillington James is being intruded upon by Jack Sparrow. And Jack wants some good lovin'. The only thing is, my James is a fervent Gillintonian (and occasional OT3er, when Theo's around). I just don't believe my James could see Sparrow as anything other than a pirate. A good man, but a pirate nonetheless.

(Don't get me wrong, I love to read sparrington, where the pairing is either (i) already established and I don't have to think about why, or (ii) the relationship grows from the two being thrown together, such as in elessil and hippediva's Pirate Vindaloo; it's just that I think too much, and so does my James, and I don't think he'd go for Jack - and especially not if it would constitute infidelity to Andrew)

I can't write Sparrington, but the bunny won't go away! I'm considering just writing it to get it out of my head.

Anyone got any better advice?

Italy: Florence Sunset
Damn, this place is cheap for a reason. No place for discs, floppy or Compact - or for USB flash drives either. Damnit.

Note to self: Go here and download later.

What's worse, I have a lovely thousand word Edward and Amy (and Jeffrey) Wedding Date ficlet and I can't post! Grrr.

Went to the Gallery earlier, and saw the Louis Le Brocquy exhibition. Intriguing. And, my God! I had no idea we had such a great collection of paintings from 17th and 18th Century England! *plotbunnies attack*

Drabbles! Who Wants Drabbles?

Italy: Florence Sunset
I need to drabble, to get back in form for writing for enjoyment again. I will write 100(ish) word drabbles for anyone who requests them. I'll limit ye to three drabble requests each, to save myself from being overloaded, but other than that, I'll write pretty much anything requested, Navyboy related (In other words, Norrington, Gillette, Groves, Murtogg and Mullroy and any permutations therof). I'll write gen, slash (any permutation - although I'll tell you now I have trouble slashing Murtogg and Mullroy), het (if you nominate a female (be it Magpie or another OFC whom I am permitted to write, Anamaria or Elizabeth) or ... eh ... polygamy (and this includes the Mer!Gillington, or other characters played by the actors).

Basically I'll write any RNotC drabbles you all want. Requests HERE s'il vous please.

NavyBoys and TheoMaria Fic

Part One concerns the three Navyboys discussing ethics, and is rated 15 or (light) R for themes.

Part One, Navyboys, is HERE

Part Two concerns Theo and AnaMaria and is rated 18 or NC-17 for graphic het sexual content.

Part Two, Theo Groves and AnaMaria, is HERE

Yes, it's Sarah Brightman. I was watching the Harem DVD rather obsessively when writing Magpie, and so she looks a lot like the good lady. I think the second one is much more like my Magali than the first, but both pics speak to me about her.

Norribeth Ficlet

Italy: Florence Sunset
Norribeth Ficlet

Disclaimer: The characters belong not to me, but to the Mouse, who does not love them like I do.

Summary: As requested by sampaguita_blue, Captain Norrington and the young Elizabeth (of perhaps 16 years) meet for the first time in some months, and a confused attraction arises (no, not like that!).

Rating: G. I haven't written Gen!fic in ages, so I hope this is up to scratch.

Author's Note: The scene in Four Weddings and a Funeral where Hugh Grant tells Andie McDowell that he thinks he loves her in a very inarticulate manner was playing in my head when writing this. There is one reference to my dislike of the canon!actress, which I will remove when promoting this fic on the Norribeth community. Enjoy it while it's here.

No Warnings. None at all. Not a sausage.

Can anyone reccommend a good book about Naval procedure? I'm looking forward to my next idea for postgraduate study, which will probably be on Athenian naval procedure (because there's no way in Hell I'm taking up Latin!) and I thought I might spend some time reading up on the British Navy at its height.
Oh! And! If any of you have read it, would you reccommend N. A. M. Rodgers, The Command of the Ocean, which, thus far is the only book on the subject that I've noticed anywhere.

Go here and look through random quotes until you find 5 that you think reflect who you are or what you believe. Repost in your journal.

1) Laughter gives us distance. It allows us to step back from an event, deal with it and then move on. Bob Newheart.

2) Basic research is what I am doing when I don't know what I am doing. Wehrner von Braun.

3) In what concerns you much, do not think that you have companions: know that you are alone in the world. Henry David Thoreau.

4) Everything is worth what its purchaser will pay for it. Publilius Syrus.

5) It is folly to punish your neighbor by fire when you live next door. Publilius Syrus.

I wish I'd known Publilius Syrus was on that database sooner. Greg told me about him on Friday.
He (P. S.) has a cliche for every occasion, and many more for no occasion whatever. Only fragments of his plays exist, and some scholasts, largely because they were thought to be shite, but people found the fragments so profound that they gathered the sayings together, and began to give him credit for other, really random things, too, and gathered them all together. It can be frankly hilarious, particularly when you open a book of his collected ... erm ... works ... on a random page.
It's either wisdom or bullshit. The line between the two is surprisingly fine.
